Investigation Timeline 2007-2008
Unit 1: Cell
and Molecular Biology
Structure, function and growth of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
Structure and function of cell components
Molecular interactions in cell events
Applications of DNA technology
Unit 1 is assessed by:
o NAB 1 Cell and Molecular Biology –Minimal
assessment 26/40 required to pass
o Term Exam - this will cover
all of Unit 1
o Prelim Exam - this will include
material from all of Unit 1 and Unit 2
o Unit 3 Exam - this will cover
all of Unit 3 but also include material from Unit 1 and Unit 2
Unit 2: Environmental
Biology
Circulation in ecosystems
Interactions in ecosystems
Human impact on the environment
Unit 2 is assessed by:
o
NAB 2 Environmental Biology –Minimal assessment 26/40 required
to pass
o Prelim Exam - this will include
material from all of Unit 1 and Unit 2
o Unit 3 Exam - this will cover
all of Unit 3 but also include material from Unit 1 and Unit 2
Unit 3: Physiology,
Health and Exercise
Exercise and the cardiovascular system
Exercise and metabolism
Unit 3 is assessed by both:
o
NAB 3 Physiology, Health and Exercise –Minimal assessment 13/20
required to pass
o Unit 3 Exam - this will cover
all of Unit 3 but also include material from Unit 1 and Unit 2
Term Exam:
• This assessment will examine the majority of Unit 1
Prelim:
• This assessment will cover Units 1 and 2.
Practical Lab Report
• This NAB practical report is internally assessed on a Pass or
Fail basis. Pupils must write a complete lab report for one selected
practical activity. There are six clearly identified criteria that must
be satisfactorily achieved.
• This NAB MUST be passed in order to successfully pass
each of the three Units
Independent Investigation:
The final investigation report will be worth 20% of the total marks.
A total of 25 marks will be allocated to the investigation report which
should be around 2000-2500 words in length excluding contents page,
tables, graphs etc.
The investigation is assessed by both an internal
NAB component and an external report marked by the SQA. The investigation
report will be externally assessed using the following assessment categories:
(a) Introduction (4 marks)
(b) Procedures (6 marks)
(c) Results (5 marks)
(d) Discussion (7 marks)
(e) Presentation (3 marks)
