Module 2.4
Sensors

A.M.D.G.

Control systems can often be improved with the introduction of sensors.

A sensor will take in information from its environment to provide feedback which can then determine an action.

An example of a system with a sensor is a burglar alarm. A burglar alarm may use a motion sensor. The alarm is set off according to the feedback given from the sesnor.

Go to http://home.howstuffworks.com/burglar-alarm2.htm and answer the following questions.

  1. What type of waves are used by the motion sensor?
  2. What happens when a person enters the room?
  3. What happens if no-one is in the room?

Sensors can sense many things

  • Light
  • Heat
  • Movement (motion)
  • smoke
  • pressure
