Unit 1: Cell Biology


Cell Biology (Chapters 1-11)
Cell biology; cell structure and function; Photosynthesis; respiration; ATP production; DNA Structure; RNA and protein synthesis; cellular defence in plants and animals.


Unit 1 is assessed by:
o
NAB 1 Cell Biology –Minimal assessment 26/40 required to pass

o Term Exam - this will cover all of Unit 1

o Prelim Exam - this will include material from all of Unit 1 and Unit 2

o Unit 3 Exam - this will cover all of Unit 3 but also include material from Unit 1 and Unit 2

 

Unit 2: Genetics and Adaptation


Genetics & Adaptation 1 (Chapters 12-26)
Variation; meiosis; genetics; mutations; evolution; selection; speciation; artificial selection; animal & plant adaptations in relation to maintaining water balance; obtaining food and coping with dangers.


Unit 2 is assessed by:
o NAB 2 Genetics and Adaptation –Minimal assessment 26/40 required to pass

o Prelim Exam - this will include material from all of Unit 1 and Unit 2

o Unit 3 Exam - this will cover all of Unit 3 but also include material from Unit 1 and Unit 2

 

Unit 3: Control and Regulation


Control & Regulation 1 (Chapters 27-36)
Growth in plants and animals; genetic & hormonal control; environmental influences; control of the internal environment in animals and plants; regulation of plant and animal populations.


•Unit 3 is assessed by both:
o NAB 3 Control and Regulation -Minimal assessment 26/40 required to pass

o Unit 3 Exam - this will cover all of Unit 3 but also include material from Unit 1 and Unit 2


Term Exam:


• This assessment will examine all of Unit 1.

Prelim:


• This assessment will cover all of Units 1 and 2.

Practical Lab Report


• This NAB practical report is internally assessed on a Pass or Fail basis. Pupils must write a complete lab report for one selected practical activity. There are six clearly identified criteria that must be satisfactorily achieved.

• This NAB MUST be passed in order to successfully pass each of the three Units
