Module 1.1 – Scintilla and Horatia at home

Pupils will be introduced to the concept of inflected language and translate simple sentences featuring nominative and accusative cases.

The pupils will also study the life of a Roman boy and Roman women.

Module 1.2 – Quintus helps his father

Pupils will study plural nouns and verbs, and explore the idea of adjectival agreement.

For the cultural part of this module, the pupils will examine the role of slaves and life in a provincial town.

Module 1.3 – Market day

Pupils will be introduced to the full range of present tense endings, and translate slightly more complex sentences, including the vocative case.

The pupils will also look at a Roman market and a Roman education.

Module 1.4 – The siege of Troy

A more comprehensive analysis of noun endings, with particular emphasis on the third declension and gender, will lead to further translation of extended passages.

For the cultural material, the pupils are introduced to the story of the Trojan war.

Module 1.5 – The fall of Troy

The genitive case is introduced, and adjectival agreement is explored in greater depth.

We also study the fall of Troy through passages in English.

Module 1.6 – The meeting of Dido and Aeneas

The noun table is completed and the grammar is used to explore the tragic story of Dido and Aeneas. This also makes up the cultural material for this chapter
