Pupils explore and develop creative drama skills. They devise a piece of drama on a negotiated issue, topic or theme in a group and also individually devise and direct a scene for a group.
By the end of the unit, pupils will have explored ideas, emotions and attitudes through role play, portrayed character, reviewed and evaluated participation in creative drama activities. The theory in this unit comprises the pupil's record of preparatory work, notes, answers to questions about the work completed in the unit and an evaluation essay written under controlled conditions.

Theatre Arts
Pupils learn about a theatre production team and explore a range of theatre production skills which are used to interpret theatrically dramatic textual extracts. Pupils choose two areas of theatre production for assessment which include: acting, set, sound, lighting, props, make-up, costume, stage management.
By the end of these modules, pupils will have participated with others in the exploration and use of theatre production skills and reviewed and evaluated those skills. They will have expressed ideas, feelings and opinions on dramatic textual extracts using chosen theatre arts. The theory comprises notes, diagrams, sketches etc made in preparation to carry out theatre production tasks; written answers to questions about the practical work. The examination at the end of the year is the required written assessment for Intermediate 2 Theatre Production Unit.

These modules comprise the work necessary for the Drama Skills Unit for Intermediate 2 Drama. Pupils will be devising and performing a presentation on a chosen issue, topic or theme. By the end of the unit, each pupil will have taken responsibility for an identifiable section of the presentation, have contributed to the presentation process and final presentation, and have evaluated the effectiveness of the final presentation. During the unit pupils will keep a folio of plans, minutes of production meetings, script, directorial notes, rehearsal diary and the designs for lighting, costumes, props, set and sound. The practical work is continuous assessment throughout the process of devising, rehearsing and performing and the theory is examined through a review and self-evaluation of the pupil’s participation in the practical work and a dramatic commentary of the pupil’s directed scene.

These modules make up the Production Unit of Intermediate 2. Pupils contribute to staging a theatre production. Each pupil acts a role and chooses to take on an individual theatre production role chosen: set designer and deviser, sound technician, lighting designer and technician, props designer and manager, make-up designer and artist, costume designer and wardrobe manager, stage manager. By the end of the unit pupils will have co-operated with others on a production, undertaken specific roles and responsibilities, used theatre production skills to contribute to the final presentation and evaluated the process and final presentation. The unit is assessed through a series of practical exercises, the contribution to the final presentation, and the theory content which comprises notes of planning, reflections on rehearsing and evaluation of performance . The performance is also part of the external Acting examination for Intermediate 2. The examiner also conducts a short interview with each candidate about the chosen theatre art.

These modules lead to the external examination of theory for Intermediate 2. Pupils read and analyse a short script supplied by the SQA and prepare for the examination in which they are required to write about the plot, theme, characterisation, language of the script and then describe how they would prepare for a production, choosing a specific role of the production team: acting, set, sound, lighting, props, make-up, costume. These modules will be assessed through a series of written exercises.

The final award for Intermediate 2 is based on 50% practical and 50% theory.
