Module 1.1 – Talk 1

Study of presentation skills; use of eye contact, detail, humour to engage audience. Assessment- pupils give a talk about themselves to the class. Week 2

Module 1.2 – Writing 1

Reading various imaginative/personal writings by professional writers; studying techniques used to capture a reader’s attention; improving vocabulary and detail of description through reading. Assessment- personal OR imaginative essay. Week 5

Module 1.3 – Reading 1

Skills of close reading, knowledge of grammar and the effects of writers’ use of various figures of speech, in particular those covered in chapters 1 and 2 of Close Reading 11-14. Assessment- Close Reading Test. Week 12

Module 1.4 – Critical Essay 1

Introduction to concepts of plot, character development, setting in novel writing OR drama; structuring of a critical essay. Assessment- Critical Essay on prose OR drama. Week 14

Module 1.5 – Textual Analysis

Skills of close reading of unseen literature; revision of poetic devices including alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhythm, rhyme, simile, metaphor, personification, run-on line; knowledge of the effects of writers’ use of various poetic devices. Assessment- Textual Analysis of a poem. Week 18

Module 1.6 – Reading 2

Skills of close reading, knowledge of grammar and the effects of writers’ use of various figures of speech, in particular those covered in chapters 1-5 of Close Reading 11-14. Assessment- Close Reading Test. Week 20

Module 1.7 – Writing 2

Revision of sentence structure; parts of speech; paragraphs; structuring an argument or report. Assessment- discursive OR persuasive essay. Week 24

Module 1.8 – Critical Essay 2

Consolidation of the important points to remember in the structuring of a critical essay; particular focus on use of quotation and analysis of language. Assessment- Critical Essay on prose OR drama OR poetry. Week 28

Module 1.9 – Talk 2

Researching a topic; group discussion OR balloon debate skills; discussion/presentation of issues in relation to the research carried out. Assessment- group discussion OR balloon debate. Week 34
