Satellite imaging; projection and the drawing of maps; longitude and latitude; topographical maps; O.S. maps and conventional symbols; scale; contours; grid references

Module 1.3 – Settlement

Factors affecting the site, situation and growth of settlements; urban development; land uses, commercial, residential, industrial and recreational; the key problems of developments and possible solutions.

Module 1.4 – Industry

Locational factors in the development of industry; the classification of industry, primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary; social, economic and environmental consequences of decline, case study of Clydeside; regeneration; enterprise zones; science and business parks.

Module 1.5 – Weather

The elements that make up weather; air masses, air pressure, depressions, cyclones, warm, cold and occluded fronts, cloud types, precipitation, thunderstorms; weather maps and symbols; meteorological instruments; how weather affects mankind and how we react to this; climatic graphs.

Module 1.6 – Farming

The inputs and outputs of farming; types of farming, livestock, arable, mixed; market-gardening; changes in farming; environmental issues.

Module 1.7 – The Environment

A study of the problems of the environment; recycling.
