Aloysians Explore French Battlefields on Learning Adventure

The Primary 7 pupils of St Aloysius’ College enjoyed one of the most formative experiences of their time as Junior School pupils when they set out on a learning adventure to France before the Easter Break.

The annual trip to France is one of the highlights of the primary 7 learning calendar where young Aloysians have the chance to experience a new culture and strengthen their friendships before entering the Senior School.

The trip brings their World War 1 learning topic to life and the pupils were thoughtful as they toured the Vimy Ridge battlefield and tunnels and respectful when they visited the Faubourg d'Amiens Cemetery in Arras to lay a wreath of poppies on behalf of the College.

Commenting on their behaviour during these learning experiences, Primary 7 teacher Mr Gilmartin described the pupils as “wonderful ambassadors for the College” and said they “displayed the utmost regard and great interest when visiting the Great War sites at Arras and Vimy.”

Adding, “It was a marvellous opportunity for the pupils to see the locations that have been part of their studies in Primary 7 and to experience what it was like for those young men serving on the Western Front.”

The young Aloysians were also wowed by a visit the Palace of Versailles and enjoyed the sights, sounds and tastes of the weekly market day in the French town of Arras.

The final part of the trip was a highlight for many of the pupils, and indeed the teachers, as they all enjoyed two well-earned days of fun at Disneyland Paris.
