GEOGRAPHY

“The aim of Geography is to understand the earth as the world of man” J.O.M. Broek 1965

Our key aim in the Geography department is to create a vibrant learning environment both within the classroom, and out with the classroom (through fieldwork). We aspire to instil in our pupils a lifelong enthusiasm for Geography and a responsibility for environmental stewardship. At the same time pupils will acquire valuable knowledge of the world and a variety of skills related to language, numeracy and graphical techniques which they will make use of throughout their lives.

Fieldwork is given particular priority by the Geography department and is carried out by all year groups. In S1 and S2, trips include local area studies and a visit to Dynamic Earth visitor centre in Edinburgh. Whilst from S3 to S6, field trips are established which enable pupils to collect data for their National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher course work. These include visits to Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and urban tours of Glasgow.

There are 3 teachers currently working in the Department, offering a wide variety of academic expertise, ranging from architecture and town planning to landscape formation and biodiversity.

We have 3 well equipped classes, each with computers, overhead projectors, printers and wifi. Pupils are encouraged to use the internet for individual research as often as possible and every pupil from S1 – S4 now has their own personal ipad available to use at home and in every lesson.

We enjoy excellent numbers at both N5 and Higher level, with over 60 and 50 pupils respectively being presented last year. Exam results were equally impressive with over 84% gaining an A grade at N5 level and over 68% achieving an A grade at Higher Level.
