CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Co-Curriculars

Co-curricular activities allow pupils to develop talents and interests beyond the formal curriculum and to work in mixed-age groups, taking on creative, leadership and initiating roles.

Senior School pupils are encouraged to participate in at least two co-curricular, sport or service activities and there is an expectation that they will do so.

The co-curriculars on offer will change each year according to interest and the availability of staff. Among the many activities currently available to pupils are:

  • public speaking
  • debating
  • parliamentary debate
  • Duke of Edinburgh's Award
  • Young Enterprise
  • drama
  • music (orchestra, wind band, ensembles)
  • school choir
  • church choir
  • theatre visits

  • film making
  • chess
  • fantasy gaming
  • newspaper
  • poetry and prose anthologies
  • art
  • electronics club
  • web page authoring

Sport

Competitive sport is also a major feature of College life with very large numbers of pupils involved in fixtures against other schools and in local and national competitions. The main sports are rugby, hockey, cross-country running and athletics.

Cricket is offered at S1-3 in the Summer Term.

Other co-curricular sports include basketball, judo, skiing, snowboarding, hill walking, badminton and gymnastics.

Charitable and service activities

Organisations that put the talents and time of pupils at the service of others also have a long and strong tradition in the College and include:

Commitment

Once pupils have committed themselves to a group or team, they are expected to honour that commitment, and to have the courtesy to inform staff when they are unable to meet what is required of them. While co-curricular groups and teams are run on an overwhelmingly voluntary basis, there may be a requirement made of some pupils to represent or use their talents for the benefit of the whole College community.
