Hardeep & Sanjeev Kohli address St. Aloysius’ College Prize Giving
23/09/2008
Media personalities and former pupils of St. Aloysius’ College Glasgow Hardeep Singh and Sanjeev Kohli handed out prizes and delivered speeches at St. Aloysius’ College annual Prize Giving which was held at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. The brothers praised their former teachers, in particular Mr Ronald Renton who recently retired from his position as Depute Head Master, and said that they were in a fortunate position to have been taught by such “great people”.
The Head Master also gave a speech during which he commended pupils for their excellent exam results in 2008: at Intermediate 2, this is the second year of a full diet of examinations with most pupils sitting nine subjects including a GCSE in Religious Studies, the pass rate was over 94% and 65% of all grades were As. The pass rate at Higher was 93%. Of the larger schools in Scotland we were the fourth highest in the country and only two percentage points away from the highest performer. 50% of all our grades were at A and 66% of the year passed five Highers, the highest percentage in the history of the College.
The Prize Giving Ceremony also celebrated wide ranging achievements of 2007-2008, including a Hockey and Rugby Tour to South Africa, participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, a choir visit to Venice and a visit to Uganda to help with the building of a school facility. The College has also piloted the Arrupe Programme. Named after the former General of the Society of Jesus, Fr. Pedro Arrupe, the community outreach programme has been adopted as a model for other Jesuit schools in the UK. Another highlight of the past year was a charity fundraising event to mark the 25th anniversary of the College’s Children’s Fund which provides activities and holidays for special needs children. That event was also hosted by Sanjeev Kohli, one of today’s guests.
