RECYCLED COUTURE ON THE CATWALK

21/05/2009

modelsFifth and Sixth year pupils helped launch a new recycled fashion label by designing outfits then modelling them for the Starter Packs charity. The Magpie range was created in the workshop at the rear of Starter Packs’ second hand store, Magpie’s Nest, on Burleigh Street in Govan.

Sam Downes (S6) organised the venue, catering, invitations and sponsorship for what turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable and successful event. Over 20 outfits (some of which were made out of curtains and tablecloths!) were showcased at the Kibble Palace for an audience of around 150 guests including members of the River City cast, stylist Kelly Cooper Barr, Catherine Maclean of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, Taroub Zahran, chief executive of GHA, a number of Glasgow councillors and Nicola Sturgeon MSP.

Project manager Sarah Findlay of household reuse charity Starter Packs said of the pupils “We straddle so many different sectors and this is bringing together people from reuse and recycling industries along with fashionistas. The pupils are very much boutique-type girls, and for them to be introduced to reuse has been very interesting”

All pupils are part of the Arrupe Service Programme which gives them the opportunity to volunteer at a variety of placements, such as hospices, nursing homes, special needs schools and SCIAF on Wednesday afternoons.
