Daniel Climbs the Podium with Double Win at British Open

Personal Excellence

Daniel Smith of S1 put in an ‘amazing performance’ at the British Mountaineering Council’s Open Youth Championships recently, earning two gold medals at what was his first national competition since being selected for the Team GB Youth Climbing Squad.

The S1 Aloysian has been a member of the College’s climbing squad since he was in Primary 5 and was selected for Team GB last year after earning two second-place finishes at prestigious British youth climbing events.

According to the Head of Outdoor Education at St Aloysius’ College, Mr Bagshaw, Daniel’s climbing skills have continued to improve thanks to his “infectious enthusiasm, energy and commitment for all things vertical!”

And as Daniel’s climbing skills continue to improve, so do his results.

The Aloysian has now followed up on his 2 silver medals at the end of 2015 by winning two gold medals in the Lead and Boulder categories at the BMC’s Open Youth Championships held recently in Liverpool and Manchester.

The British Mountaineering Council’s website congratulated Daniel for ‘doing the double’ and said he put in a ‘standout effort’ to score the highest points in both Lead and Bouldering climbing styles at Youth C level.

Mr Bagshaw, Head of Outdoor Education at St Aloysius’ College, proudly added

“Daniel put in an amazing performance. This was his first major competition since getting into the GB team so it’s great to see him perform above expectations.”

Speaking after Daniel was selected for the Great Britain Team at the end of last year, Mr Bagshaw said,

“I certainly see this milestone as the very start of what will be an exciting and highly rewarding journey for Daniel.  I look forward to new boundaries being set and the many new accomplishments a talented climber such as Daniel will undoubtedly achieve in the future.”

The College is currently running a fundraising appeal, asking the Aloysian Community to be our sporting heroes and contribute to our brand new on-campus sports facility where Aloysians like Daniel will be able to develop their strength and conditioning in a state of the art multi-gym.
