Mya and Maisy Dacre Give Christmas to a Worthy Cause

Not all of us would be willing to spend Christmas Day away from our families. It’s probably the biggest day of the year to donate. However, Mya Dacre (S3) did just that. 

For the past three year, the local kids café Jellytots and Cookies has hosted an free event for the homeless, hungry and less privileged in the community. Over the course of the day, children were given stockings brimming with gifts kindly donated by members of the local community, and professional hairdressers and make-up artists were on hand to provide makeovers for each guest. The day was rounded off with a warm three-course meal and friendly conversation.

This was Mya’s first Christmas away from her family, and was an experience she will never forget. Mya volunteered all day as a runner for the hairdressers, and as her mum recalls, when she came to pick her up after lunch, Mya explained she didn’t want to go home yet. She stayed until almost 5pm.

It is becoming something of a family tradition in the Dacre household. Mya’s mum went along to help out last year, and this time round her grandma joined her for the Christmas festivities in the café. Next year, Mya says she even wants to volunteer again.

Mya’s Sister, Maisy Dacre (P4), has also been helping in the local community over the Christmas period.  She brought in a story to read to her class, about helping the homeless in her local area:

We took food and clothes, new stuff like sleeping bags and a tent, but they were not there. So my dad made a fire for them because it was cold.
