Old Aloysian Shortlisted in National Art Competition

Old Aloysian Shortlisted in National Art Competition

A piece of artwork by Lizzie Carmichael, an Old Aloysian from the Class of 2015, has been shortlisted as one of the favourites to appear on next year’s cover of the national Arts and Crafts Magazine, Specialist Crafts.

The talented Old Aloysian flourished in Art and Design at both Higher and Advanced Higher levels and moved on from still-life work in Higher to portraits in S6, marrying her two favourite subjects, Science and Art, through both forms of painting.

Reflecting on Lizzie’s time in the Green Blazer, her former teacher and head of Art and Design at the College Mrs Daly said,

“Lizzie has been a highly creative, enthusiastic and superbly talented pupil to have taught. All of her Art teachers during her six years at St Aloysius’ College have thoroughly enjoyed teaching her.

It has been a great pleasure to see her skills, interests and talents for Art develop to such a sophisticated and individually striking level, culminating in her excellent Advanced Higher portfolio where she married her interests in both Science and Art.”

Much to the OAs delight, one of her acrylic paint self-portraits from her Advanced Higher year titled ‘Double Orbit’ was selected from Mrs Daly’s entries and placed on the shortlist of the national art competition whose winners will be announced in December,

“Lizzie was extremely pleased to hear that a piece of her art work had been shortlisted for the 2016 Specialist Crafts Catalogue Cover Competition."

Said Mrs Daly,

"She is thrilled to have her work recognised and we wish her all the best for the final judging in December.”

Lizzie’s love of science is clear to see in many of her pieces of Art work and the Old Aloysian has now taken up a place to study Biochemistry at St Andrew’s University.
