Senior Pupils Impress in Rotary Club Schools Contest

The 2016 Public Speakers have once again done the College proud – with four pupils from the Senior School making it to the final of the last edition of the Annual Schools Public Speaking Competition, and Honor McWilliams of S6 scooping the top prize.

Huge congratulations must go to Honor, who has competed in the competition – run by the Rotary Club of Glasgow since the 1980s – for six years amongst some of the country’s most talented orators. Our younger competitors, Humzah Razzaq, Scarlett Morris and Eva Pryce (all S2), made the final at their first attempt and delivered lively performances – presented entirely without recourse to notes or lectern.

Mr Meechan, Mr Ruddy and Dr Simpson, who run the Public Speaking Club were, understandably, incredibly proud of all four pupils and how they performed in the final, which took place in the Govan Mbeki Building at Caledonian University on Tuesday, 22nd November.

Mr Meechan said: “It is unprecedented for a school to field four finalists, which is testament to the hard work and perseverance of our young people. The College’s Public Speaking Club continues to thrive, with over 40 regular attendees.

“Many thanks should go to Honor and James Frazier who run the weekly club meetings, and to Mr Ruddy for his assistance in helping all of our Rotary entrants to prepare for competition. He has attended each Heat and has been an excellent source of encouragement.”

Mr Ruddy added: “It was a privilege to witness the hard work and enthusiasm of each pupil who took part in our qualifier and heats. It was also heartening to see College pupils and parents turn out to support them. All four St Aloysius’ College finalists will be remembered for their entertaining, energetic and confident performances. They were certainly amongst the most impressive of the 19 speakers on the night.”
