Chemistry Pupils Receive Career Insight at Glasgow University

Report by Georgia Dunn

Last month a group of nine pupils from S3-5, accompanied by Mrs Graham and Mr Anderson, visited the Chemistry Department of Glasgow University.

Led by Dr Paschke, we were shown the labs which hold up to 100 students as well as the lecture theatre holding 500.

We were also able to take part in an experiment; an exothermic reaction of iron oxide and aluminium powder produced molten iron at 1500C.

Dr Paschke informed us that a chemistry degree allows you to require multiple skills and can open many doors. For example, she told us that a large number of Chemistry Graduates of the previous year had gone on to careers in finance, forensic science and environmental health.

Her overall message was that studying chemistry does not necessarily limit you only to chemistry related jobs. She recommended for those interested in obtaining a beneficial degree to consider chemistry. After having visited Glasgow University's facilities, It seems a great place to study the subject.
