P7 visit the Peoples Palace

As part of their studies of the USA and Glasgow’s connection with the Trans-Atlantic trade, the P7 pupils went to the People’s Palace and Winter Gardens in Glasgow Green to explore an aspect of Glasgow’s history: the connection between the Tobacco Lords and their links with the transatlantic slave trade.  Their workshops allowed them to find out more about the Glassford family story, and handle artefacts relating to Slave trade.

The Winter Gardens allowed the students to conduct their own mini case study of cash crops grown on the plantations and the labour involved in growing, harvesting and exporting these goods.

It all made for a very informative session and thought-provoking session, heightening awareness for the need to respect the rights and freedoms of all people at home and further afield.
