St Aloysius' out on Top in West of Scotland Chemistry

Personal Excellence

A team of talented chemistry pupils from St Aloysius’ College came out on top when they competed against 11 other schools at the Royal Society of Chemistry’s West of Scotland Top of the Bench Competition at the University of Glasgow.

The annual Top of the Bench Chemistry Competition is organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry to help schools enthuse, excite and inspire the next generation of talented chemical scientists.

And with the competition’s purpose reflecting the ethos of excellence which St Aloysius’ College strives for, those in the Green Blazer have often done well in both the West of Scotland and UK Finals.

This year, the College's winning team consisted of Erin Campbell S4, Finn Stockwell S3, Aidan Murray S3 and Ciara Spratt of S2, and the youngest member, Ciara, found the competition element particularly enjoyable, saying,

“It felt really good and exciting to win. It was actually quite fun to study for because it was a competition and we’re very pleased that it all paid off”

Competing against the strongest chemistry pupils from 11 State and Independent Schools in Glasgow and the West of Scotland, the Aloysians did fantastically well to win.

Their prize is a spot in the national final which will take place in England next year and will see them compete against winning teams from throughout the United Kingdom.

Mr Anderson, the Head of Chemistry, is delighted that the College has once again won the West of Scotland heat of the competition and feels that this current crop of Aloysian chemists could have what it takes to go all the way,

“To win the competition this year is fabulous. The team can now look forward to the National Final and with any luck we can beat our best ever result of 2nd place. I’m proud of Erin, Finn, Aidan and Ciara and hope they have enjoyed the experience.”
