Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial Day

On this day 75 years ago, Soviet soldiers liberated Auschwitz-Birkenau. To mark Holocaust Memorial Day our senior school pupils attended a remembrance assembly at St Aloysius' Church to remember the victims and survivors of the Holocaust.

O Lord, remember not only the men and women of goodwill
but also those of evil will.
But do not remember all the suffering they have inflicted upon us;
remember the fruits we have borne thanks to this suffering –
our comradeship,
our loyalty,
our humility,
our courage,
our generosity,
the greatness of heart which has grown out of all this;
and when they come to the judgement,
let all the fruits that we have borne be their forgiveness.
Amen.

This prayer was found written on a scrap piece of paper that was found near the body of a Jewish girl at Ravensbrück concentration camp. May we find consolation in that we are all capable of love and forgiveness even when surrounded by hate and doubt.
