Co-curricular

Sport

Sport

At St. Aloysius' College, Sport begins in Kindergarten, with formal PE sessions lead by our PE teaching staff. Our 3-18 curriculum offers smooth progression from Kindergarten to S6 and Sport is an integral part of our young people's school experience. Our traditional sports are Hockey, Rugby, and Athletics but we offer a diverse, broad and exciting co-curricular programme, designed to suit all.

Rugby

Rugby is played by our boys from Primary 4 to 7. Fun is the focal point, however, we do introduce basic physical competency using body weight exercises and agility games to improve balance, coordination, speed, strength and endurance, all in a fun and non-threatening environment. Our Primary 6s and 7s participate in after-school training sessions at our Playing Fields at Millerston. We encourage all our pupils to represent the College at inter-school match fixtures at the weekend.

Hockey

Hockey is played by our girls from Primary 4 to 7. Our Primary 6 and 7s participate in after-school training at the National Hockey Centre at Glasgow Green. Sessions are lead by our experienced coaches, many of whom have played at National or International Level. We encourage all our pupils to represent the College at inter-school match fixtures at the weekend.

Athletics

Athletics is a core part of our curriculum and as such an essential co–curricular activity. We participate in all major competitions from District League Matches to Glasgow Schools and Scottish Schools events. In Term 3, from March to June, our main curricular and co-curricular focus is Athletics. Each year group from Primary 4-7 works on their discipline on their Games day. Primaries 6 and 7 can take part in after-school sessions in Term 3 and train on a Saturday morning at Millerston. Many of our children from Primary 5 to 7 participate in the annual Henderson Challenge Competition.

Basketball

Basketball is a global sport that is fast-paced and combines the need for individual skill and excellent teamwork. Our Primary 7 children have the chance to train each week at an after-school club, along with some S1s and S2s, learning the sport and developing the basic skills. It is great for fitness and great for developing coordination and ball-handling skills. The pupils also have the opportunity to play in fixtures in order to challenge themselves in competitive matches.

Netball

Netball is on offer as an after-school activity for Primaries 4 to 7.

Football

Football is on offer as an after-school activity for Primaries 4 to 7. It is lead by our Director of Football, Mr Zander Diamond. Our Primary 6 and 7 children take part in the annual Archbishop Tartaglia Football Tournament.

Kayaking

Kayaking is open to Primary 7 pupils along with S1 pupils as an after-school activity at our kayaking base at Pinkston Canoe Centre during the summer term (April-June). Pupils work towards kayak skill awards over the year. Progression will include canoe and kayak trips along with options to specialise in either Slalom, Freestyle, Marathon and Sprint Kayaking at club level.

Cross Country

Cross Country is a core part of our curriculum and as such an essential co–curricular activity. We participate in all major competitions from District Matches to Glasgow Schools and Scottish Schools events. From August to March we focus on Cross Country events and host our own invitational match.

Golf

Golf is an excellent sport that requires focus and concentration and demands exemplary sportsmanship. Pupils from Primary 4 to Primary 7 have the opportunity for weekly tuition as ann after-school activity at a variety of excellent venues. We participate in all major competitions from St Andrew’s to Glasgow.

Swimming

We participate in all regional and national competitions from Glasgow Schools Swimming Finals to Scottish Schools Finals.
