MODERN LANGUAGES

“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head.  If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.” Nelson Mandela

We are a dynamic, enthusiastic department committed to providing a positive language learning experience for all.  We offer French, Spanish and Italian up to Advanced Higher, whilst other languages can also be accommodated if required.  We use a wide variety of resources to help make our language courses interesting and accessible.  We encourage our pupils to become independent learners through our provision of online resources and extra support sessions both with teachers, older peers and language assistants.

The majority of our pupils achieve A grades at National 5, Higher or Advanced Higher, and many go on to study languages at university and beyond.  Modern Languages qualifications can significantly enhance career prospects as well as broadening our pupils’ cultural horizons.

Pupils are encouraged to participate in several co-curricular activities, including Maths/Language Challenges, Film Competitions and Cinema/Theatre visits.  These activities provide a contextualised learning experience and help foster independent learning and real enjoyment of the language.

We have an active programme of trips and have developed links with several partner schools in Europe.  Currently we have trips to Madrid in Spain and to Normandy and Paris in France.  These trips involve school visits, language school lessons and lots of opportunities to put the pupils’ classroom learning into practice.  We also organise work experience placements for our older students.
